Fabulous opportunity for the right person

Siftware is a well-established web development company looking to bring another senior developer into the business to help manage clients and our seven strong developer team. We welcome insight and initiative and will provide an enabling environment to grow, to get directly involved and to influence the company’s future direction.

About you

You’re likely a freelancer who is considering taking on a full-time position, or someone working at an agency who has lots of experience working with clients. Either way, you’re looking for a new challenge and post-COVID, a better work/life balance.

You’re personable and have a high degree of emotional intelligence as well as strong opinions about development best practices. You may be thinking about setting up on your own or taking a job in management, but you are not sure where to start. Conversely, you may be frustrated or stressed with the responsibility of running your own business – chasing invoices, finding new work – and seek a supportive framework in which to continue your career.

About us

Siftware specialises in providing high-quality development services to the owners of complex legacy PHP web applications. We help make sure that things stay secure, the lights stay on and that new features are shipped in a timely fashion.

We are a full-remote team – since before it was fashionable – of seven developers and four support staff operating across the UK and overseas. Our client base is varied, and we currently operate in the following sectors: education, leisure, security, finance, marketing, energy, communications.

We have a number of larger, long-term projects where clients treat us as an extension of their in-house web teams and where we get to ship new features in an iterative fashion as well as a stream of smaller jobs where the focus is stability, security and peace of mind for their owners. Most of our work is with bespoke systems, not projects founded on a CMS or eCommerce platform.

As well as responding to our clients’ specific needs, we are also developing our own applications, both to improve our internal tooling and as standalone commercial projects.

The finer details

This is a senior developer position, as well as great technical credentials we need a self-starter who can manage their own workload and from time to time, that of more junior team members.

You should be comfortable working with various PHP frameworks and ORMs. Your frontend dev skills, particularly NodeJS/React/VueJS also need to be sharp and you’ve some experience working with modern workflows (version control, CI, Docker/Vagrant). Whilst we’re not looking for a sysadmin, some degree of confidence on the CLI to configure and build projects is a must.

From a client-facing perspective, it is essential that you are used to leading client meetings to discuss project progress or scope and also to have experience in producing estimates and proposals for new work.

In return we can offer you:

  • Competitive salary (£40k-£60k) based on experience
  • The security of a full-time PAYE role and the support framework that comes with it, whilst working exclusively remotely.
  • Flexible working over an 8-hour day. Got kids? Need to do the school run or put dinner on the table at 5pm? Have a life outside of work that you need to fit things around? Not a problem; we care about the quality and consistency of your output not ‘bums on seats’ from 9 – 6. Of course, our clients’ requirements are paramount, but we trust that our team manage their own and the clients’ priorities effectively. Note: at a minimum, we require the equivalent of a 4 day week from you.
  • Work on low-churn, long term bespoke web software projects. You’ll get to steer the architectural direction of these projects and see things evolve over many iterations. If you love refactoring old code and retrofitting modern frameworks and methodologies to products, this is the role for you
  • Good kit – top end MacBook Pro, Surface Laptop or similar
  • Pension
  • Opportunity for personal development
  • 4 weeks holiday on top of the week we close the office over Christmas
  • Allowances for conferences, books and training
